DESCRIPTION:Contrary to the popular belief that slavery was practiced exclusively in the South\, Northern states were also dependent on enslaved African labor in the 17th and 18th centuries. Slavery was not legally abolished in New York State until 1827. A descendant of slaves\, Joseph McGill of The Slave Dwelling Project travels the country staying overnight in historic slave dwellings to bring awareness to their existence\, history\, and need for preservation. Historic Huguenot Street and SUNY New Paltz are proudly co-hosting his first visit to the Hudson Valley. Mr. McGill will spend the night in a cellar kitchen on Huguenot Street with a small group of SUNY New Paltz students and members of the public.
