SUMMARY:Community Talks Cancer - A Legislative Breakfast Talk Show
DESCRIPTION:The Fight Against Smoking Continues\n\nTobacco\, electronic cigarettes and more\n\nJoin the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and host Ward Todd on May 8\, 2015 for a timely discussion on the continuing fight against tobacco and the growing popularity of electronic tobacco.\n\nTobacco use is the number one cause of preventable disease and death in NYS. Approximately 2.4 million adult New Yorkers still smoke. While adult and youth smoking rates have declined in NYS\, the rates for smokers with lower incomes\, lower educational attainment or serious mental illness have not. Although NYS youth smoking rates are at their lowest recorded rates\, 12\,900 youth under 18 become new daily smokers each year and 107\,000 NYS high school students currently smoke. Unless youth smoking rates continue to drop\, an estimated 280\,000 NYS youth under 18 now will die early from smoking.\n\nThe recent emergence of electronic cigarettes and their growing use among youth have added another layer to the debate over the fight against smoking. The growth of electronic cigarette use and the potential of drawing non-smokers into nicotine addiction and the fact that e-cigarette users who continue to use cigarettes will not experience the health benefits of quitting has raised significant concern among the health community. Join us as we explore their impact on our community.\n\nThere is no cost but space is limited. The deadline for registration is Friday May 1st
